Air Turbines: Technology

?What is it
The
"Magenn Power Air Rotor System" (MARS) is a helium filled, cylindrical device, deployed at 1000ft maximum altitude, that rotates about its horizontal axis in response to the wind, generating clean energy at a low cost than competing systems.

?How does it work
The cylindrical MARS unit is filled with helium, which provides the lift necessary to keep it in the air, additional lift is provided by the Magnus effect, where a rotating object in the air can also generate lift for itself. This effect also enables the unit to stay in place, rather than constantly drift downwind. Once the wind passes over the unit, electricity is generated by rotation of the MARS unit, and it is then transferred by cables to the ground into a transformer.

Air Turbines: Advantages

Air turbines have numerous advantages, they are highly flexible deployment, have lower costs, have better efficiency than competing systems, and are more environmentally friendly

 In terms of electrical energy output, the Magenn systems are less expensive than competing wind power systems (under 15c per kWh 

Air turbines can be placed close to wherever they are needed, so no need for long, costly power lines, or other expensive infrastructure

 Air turbines can operate at higher wind speeds than conventional wind turbines
 Air turbines float high up in the air, up to 1000ft, thus capitalizing on higher wind speeds

 Visual impact is also reduced, as air turbines are less visible than conventional wind turbines

Noise impact is also reduced due to the high altitude operation of the air turbines

 There is less of an impact on the bird and bats population. Air turbines are softer objects, without any deadly solid blades


 Air turbines are highly mobile, and can be moved easily. This is especially good for emergency disaster relief situations. See also, applications of air turbines

Air Turbines: Disadvantages

Air turbines have very small number of disadvantages

 Height restrictions: currently Magenn units are limited to 1000ft maximum altitude

 Air turbines permanently deployed over 150ft will require a document/permission from the FAA that lets the pilots know of its presence (a NOTAM). However, it is not difficult to obtain

 It is possible for the balloon unit to detach from its tether and escape, however Magenn units are equipped with an automatic deflation system, so it doesn't drift away

Air Turbines: Applications

Air turbine power can be applied to both on-grid and off-grid sites, or combined with diesel power. It can be used for developing nations, island populations, farming industry, oil and gas wells, mining sites, offshore drilling stations, and backup power & water pumps, and many other applications
